Stained Glass Brownstone
This Park Slope Brownstone in a landmarked building near Prospect Park was modernized to accommodate the needs of a young family that moved to the city from Washington D.C. The original footprint had a compressed configuration and poor programmatic flow, which became a core component of the renovation. The kitchen, which was originally sequestered to the back of the parlor level, was moved to the center of this main level, and a new private dining room was created. Custom cabinetry and the removal of paneled walls required us to realign the various facets of the kitchen to ensure visual cohesion throughout the meandering spaces. The clients’ passion for color is expressed throughout the home. In the new dining area, vibrant, blue paint provides a playful juxtaposition to the otherwise white, monochromatic palette that existed prior to the renovation. In the primary bathroom, rainbow colored tiles were hand selected to reflect the colors that appear in the original stained glass above the shower. This idea of utilizing the existing palette of colors from inherent design material is repeated in the living room, where the greenish tones in a partition wall with stained glass near the wet bar is repeated in the new countertop and dark green painted accent wall. The upstairs floor was turned into a space for the kids, equipped with two large bedrooms. Certain elements, like the floor ad more staied glass, were kept and refinished to maintain the original integrity of the existing site and its design features. The basement was completely renovated and converted into a space for storage and guest accommodations with a new bathroom.
