Apartment for Musicians

The owners of this Brooklyn apartment—two professional jazz musicians—hired SJA to renovate the space to better accommodate their creative lives. One of the principal objectives of this project was to ensure the couple's grand piano could fit comfortably into the home. To do this, SJA reconstituted structural systems to ensure the historic space could safely hold this heavy object. The design reconfigured the layout to create space for the piano and for a creative live/work environment. With interest and expertise in woodworking, the client collaborated with SJA to create custom millwork throughout the kitchen and dining areas, adding a personalized element to the apartment’s design.
