Gipsy Trail Home
For this house in Upstate New York, SJA carried out a comprehensive renovation, transforming a long-neglected cottage into a contemporary retreat for a young family. Situated amidst a wooded landscape near Carmel, NY, the house, built in the 1920s, had fallen into considerable disrepair. The building had settled over the years, becoming structurally compromised, so we updated its structure, bringing the building up to full contemporary code. A newly-added covered porch now provides space for indoor/outdoor living. The former kitchen had been a dark environment with a low ceiling, so our renovation transformed it into an open environment with a significantly higher clearance. Wherever possible, we retained the house’s historic details, as we did with the dark wood accents that articulate doorways, windows, and built-in cabinetry. To brighten the space, we removed wood paneling and added skylights.
